The Apollo 11 mission was the first manned mission to land on the Moon. At 02:56 on July 21, 1969, the Commander Armstrong made his descent to the Moon's surface.
But did you know that YKK® was the first zipper on the Moon?
YKK® airtight zippers were used on space suits for the Apollo 11 mission.
A space suit is designed to keep a person alive and comfortable in the harsh environment of outer space where small meteors, space debris, huge temperature differences and a vacuum exist. On the Moon’s surface, the temperature can be as low as minus 157 degrees Celsius at night, and as high as 120 degrees Celsius (during the day?)!
As you can see, the specifications for a zipper on a space suit are extremely demanding. But the YKK® airtight zipper met all the requirements, and was chosen to be used on space suits by NASA.
